ALLEGHANY BEATS BYRD, FINISHES 3RD IN DISTRICT

Guard Michael Hunter scored 34 points to propel Alleghany to a 79-71 victory against William Byrd in a Blue Ridge District boys' basketball game Friday night.

The victory enabled Alleghany (17-3 overall, 7-3 Blue Ridge) to pull into a second-place tie with Northside in the regular-season standings. The Vikings, however, won the No. 2 seed in next week's tournament at the Salem Civic Center by virtue of a coin flip. William Byrd (14-6, 6-4) will be seeded fourth.

Trailing 29-23 at halftime, the Mountaineers turned up their offense in the third quarter, outscoring the Terriers 25-10 to take command.

Todd Wheatley had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. David Robertson paced Byrd with 25 points. \

Laurel Park 79

Magna Vista 67

MARTINSVILLE - Laurel Park finished the season unbeaten with a fast start and superb free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter of the Piedmont District game.

The Lancers (20-0, 18-0) broke a 4-4 tie with a 10-0 run, sparked by Carlos Cooke's six points and Lonzy Robertson's four. Laurel Park never led by fewer than six points after that.

In the fourth quarter, Laurel Park made 12 of 16 free throws to put the game away. The Lancers were 25-of-31 from the line overall.

Robertson finished with a game-high 22 points and Ronnie Jackson added 20.

Marcus Toney paced Magna Vista (14-6, 13-5) with 19 points. \

Martinsville 79

Bassett 70 BASSETT - The Bengals made seven consecutive

3-pointers in the fourth quarter but couldn't wipe out all of a 17-point deficit in losing to the Bulldogs in the Piedmont District.

Bassett (4-16, 4-14), which did not get closer than four points in the final quarter, was led by sharpshooting Art Wade, who canned five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 25 points.

Vincent Eggleston had 21 points and Maurice Spencer 18 for Martinsville (16-4, 14-4).

Fieldale-Collinsville 59

CHATHAM - Chatham dominated the first half and went on to bounce Fieldale-Collinsville in a Piedmont District game.

LaVelton Pope with 22 points and Rodney Williams with 16 paced the winning Cavaliers (8-12, 8-10).

The losing Cavaliers (14-6, 12-6) will be the No. 4 seed in next week's Piedmont District tournament. \

Dan River 74

RINGGOLD - Khris Law dribbled the length of the floor and scored at the buzzer to lead the Trojans, who blew a 15-point first-quarter lead but rallied from a six-point deficit in the final three minutes of the Piedmont District game.

The Wildcats (5-16, 5-13) were leading 74-73 and appeared to be in good shape before Brian Gunn missed a free throw with five seconds left. Gunn was 8-of-8 from the line until that point and finished with a team-high 24 points.

Tunstall (12-9, 10-8) led 27-12 after the first quarter, but Dan River came back to tie the score at the half, 37-37. Dan River was ahead by six in the fourth quarter before the Trojans' Chris Walton made a 3-pointer and was fouled. He completed the rare four-point play.

It was one of four 3-pointers by Walton and eight by the Trojans, led by Law with 26 points. Walton had 20 points and Hubert Adkins added 16. Chris Wilson had 17 for the Wildcats. \

Patrick County 53

GRETNA - Rob Harris, who had missed much of the season with a broken wrist, made the first start of his career and sank three straight 3-pointers to spur the Hawks (5-15, 5-13). Chris Reynolds led all scorers with 26 points for the Cougars (4-16, 2-16). \

Auburn 83

Narrows 74

RINER - Andy Johnson, Terry Millirons and Jon Reed scored 18 points each as the Eagles (14-7, 12-6) rolled over the Green Wave for a Mountain Empire District win.

Narrows (7-13, 6-12) jumped to a 25-8 lead in the first quarter and led 44-32 at halftime. Auburn rallied in the second half, outscoring the Green Wave 23-14 in the third quarter and 28-16 in the fourth. \

Bath County 86

Highland 64

MONTEREY - Craig Phillips scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Chargers to a Piedmont District victory over the Rams.

Kris Phillips had 15 points and Billy Thomas and Tyler McCune added 12 points each for Bath County (10-11, 6-6). Mike Reese, who finished with 10 points and five rebounds, left the game in the third quarter with a knee injury.

Highland (3-16, 0-11) was led by Chris Shill with a career-high 33 points.

Chilhowie 53

CHILHOWIE - The Hogoheegee District regular-season champion Pioneers (17-3, 13-1) led all the way but never could shake the Warriors (12-8, 7-7).

Lebanon rushed to a 13-7 first-quarter lead as Chilhowie made only two 3-pointers and a free throw, and the Pioneers never led by less than one point or more than 11.

The Hogoheegee District tournament starts Tuesday night at the home sites of the top four seeded teams. Semifinals are Thursday and the final Friday at Emory & Henry. \

Gate City 85

Marion 71

GATE CITY - Scotty Vermillion scored 22 points and John St. Martin added 20, leading the Blue Devils past the Scarlet Hurricane in a Highlands District game.

Jason Jones contributed 14 points for Gate City (16-4, 6-4), which took an early lead and coasted. Jason Lefler paced Marion (8-13, 3-7) with 31 points.

\ Thursday's games

\ Grayson County 57, Galax 51: At Galax, Mitch Hawks scored 28 points in leading the Blue Devils (15-2 district) over the Maroon Tide (12-5 district) in a Mountain Empire District game. Galax led 24-23 at halftime, and Grayson County led 37-34 after three quarters. It stayed close in the fourth quarter until four minutes remained. Then Galax made four unforced turnovers and the Blue Devils got two easy layups to lead 53-49. Free throws ended the Maroon Tide's hopes. Grayson County was 14-for-17 on free throws in the fourth. \

Lynchburg Christian 78, Carlisle 44: At Lynchburg, Carlisle closed its season with a Virginia Independent Conference loss. Andrew Tunnell and Adnan Javaid both scored a game-high 13 points and made three 3-point field goals for the Chiefs (2-20, 1-13). \
