BASSETT, GRETNA VOLLEYBALL TEAMS ADVANCE

Bassett and Gretna advanced to the semifinal round of the Region III volleyball tournament with victories on Friday in Forest. Bassett defeated William Byrd 15-9, 10-15, 15-11 while Gretna topped Rustburg 15-13, 15-8.

The semifinals are set for today at Jefferson Forest High School. Bassett meets Jefferson Forest at 2 p.m. and Gretna takes on Salem at 3. The championship game is scheduled for approximately 5.

Washington and Lee's Rebekah Prince set a meet record and had an NCAA conditional qualifying time by finishing the women's 200-meter IM in 2:12.62 at the Atlantic States and Old Dominion Athletic Conference swimming championships. Radford is leading W&L after the first day of competition, which goes through Sunday.

Franklin County Speedway will have a race car preview today at Liberty Fair Mall in Martinsville. Exhibitors from all classes of competition will be represented. Admission is free.
