NORTHSIDE WINS, FLIPS INTO 2ND IN BLUE RIDGE

Center Walt Derey poured in a game-high 30 points and had 18 rebounds as Northside clinched a second-place tie in the Blue Ridge District with a 66-56 boys' basketball victory over visiting Rockbridge County on Friday night.

Northside is 17-4 overall, 7-3 in the district and tied with Alleghany for second place behind Salem heading into next week's district tournament, but the Vikings won a coin flip for second place and earn a bye into Thursday night's semifinals at the Salem Civic Center. The Wildcats are 8-13, 1-9.

Derey sank 10-of-14 from the field and was 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.

Northside bolted to a 48-27 halftime lead and played reserves a good portion of the second half. Jimmy Porter added 11 for the Vikings.

Marty Early had 11 points for the Wildcats. \

Alleghany 79

William Byrd 71

COVINGTON - Guard Michael Hunter scored 34 points to propel the Mountaineers past the Terriers in a Blue Ridge District game.

The victory enabled Alleghany (17-3, 7-3) to pull into a second-place tie with Northside in the regular-season standings. The Vikings, however, won the No. 2 seed in next week's tournament at the Salem Civic Center by virtue of a coin flip. William Byrd (14-6, 6-4) will be seeded fourth.

Trailing 29-23 at halftime, the Mountaineers turned up their offense in the third quarter, outscoring the Terriers 25-10 to take command. Byrd made four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter but couldn't make up the huge deficit.

Todd Wheatley had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. David Robertson paced Byrd with 25 points. \

Glenvar 63

James River 53

The Highlanders outscored the Knights 22-12 in the second quarter to take command and went on to register the Pioneer District victory at Glenvar.

Glenvar (15-6, 11-1), Pioneer District regular-season champion, dominated the rebounding (39-21) and limited James River (8-13, 6-6) to 30 percent shooting from the field.

Jason Woolwine led the Highlanders with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Brad Malcom added 14 points. Troy Thompson had 18 points for James River. \

Covington 74

Craig County 70

COVINGTON - The Cougars let most of a 19-point lead slip away in the face of a 33-point fourth-quarter barrage by Craig County.

Senior Kevin Lucas had 14 of his 28 points and four of his six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter for Craig County (9-12, 3-9). The Rockets came no closer than four points in the final quarter of the Pioneer District game.

Junior Van Wallace was the high scorer for Covington (11-8, 7-4) with 23 points. Keeno Jones had 16 points and Cory Hunter added 15 for the Cougars, who led 49-37 after three quarters. \

CHATHAM - Norville Inus scored 11 of his game-high 29 points in the third quarter as the Tigers broke the game open and ended the Eagles' season with the Virginia Independent Conference victory.

Only the top four teams in each division advance to the VIC tournament, and Roanoke Valley Christian (7-11, 5-9) fell short.

Rod Cobb added 19 points for Hargrave Military (16-4, 12-2). Josh McDermod had 14 to lead Roanoke Valley Christian. \

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Warriors raised their record to 29-0 and can clinch a perfect season tonight against Prospect Hall of Frederick, Md., in the St. James Invitational.

Oak Hill, ranked third in the country by USA Today, grabbed a 52-19 halftime lead and coasted behind Jerry Stackhouse, who had a game-high 26 points, and Jeff McInnis, who finished with 18.

Sixth-ranked Prospect Hall (22-1) suffered its only loss to Oak Hill in December in Hawaii. \

Blacksburg 71

Carroll County 69

HILLSVILLE - Greg Shockley's two free throws with 10 seconds remaining lifted the Indians (10-10, 6-0) to the New River District win over the Cavaliers (6-15, 2-4).

Carroll County cut a 69-64 deficit in the final minute to one point before Shockley locked it up for Blacksburg.

Jay Safford led the Indians with a game-high 29 points. Stephen Dalton with 19 points and John Wolford with 18 led the Cavaliers. \

\ Cave Spring 54

William Fleming 48

Kim Stewart scored 26 points as the Knights ran past the Colonels for a Roanoke Valley District win.

Cave Spring, the regular-season district champion, led 22-21 at halftime but outscored William Fleming 14-8 in the third quarter. The Knights sank 22 of 25 free throws to capture the win.

Deon Russell led William Fleming (12-7, 6-6) with 15 points. Marqueetta Randolph scored 14, including the 1,085th point of her four-year career. \

Blue Ridge Conference

\ Lynchburg Christian 59, Roanoke Valley Christian 42: At Lynchburg, Mandy Ferguson scored 26 points and Shannon Carroll added 13 as Lynchburg Christian knocked off the Eagles in a semifinal game.

RVC senior guard Brandi Surkamer, who finished with a team-high 21, scored the 1,000th point of her career, finishing with 1,006 total. The Eagles finish the season 11-12.

Lynchburg Christian (17-2) trailed 13-7 after the first quarter but outscored RVC 20-4 in the second quarter by using strong inside play.

Lynchburg Christian will play Roanoke Catholic for the district championship tonight at 7:30. \

Roanoke Catholic 42, Holy Cross 34: At Lynchburg, Abby Dickson scored 17 points and Elaine Ronquillo added 11 as the Celtics downed the Gaels in a semifinal game.

Roanoke Catholic (18-3) led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and coasted to the win.

Emily deGuzman and Sarah Lexa scored 12 points each to lead Holy Cross (13-9). \
