OBIT SMITH, CLYDE TREMAN

SMITH, Clyde Treman, 86, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, February 17, 1993, after a very brief illness. He was a resident of Warm Hearth Village, where he was an active member of the Founders Forest Residence Council. He was born December 31, 1906 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late Annie Laurie Richardson and David Dickerson Smith. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1931. He was a professional forester for the state of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for 40 years. In that capacity he was responsible for the development and management of many state forests and parks. He became a resident of Blacksburg in 1985 and was involved as a volunteer at the Blacksburg Ranger District of the Jefferson National Forest and the Virginia Tech College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources. He was a member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gretchen B. Smith. Surviving are three children, Sharon Smith Viles of Worcester, Mass., David William Smith, Blacksburg, and Mary Ellen Smith, Seattle, Wash.; one brother, William Lewis Smith, West Bend, Wis.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing the Gretchen and Clyde Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Virginia Tech College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources through the Virginia Tech Foundation. Donations can be sent to David W. Smith, College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources, 324 Cheatham Hall, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. 24061-0324. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Februay 21, 2 p.m. at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. The Rev. D. Cameron Murchison Jr. will officiate.
