OBIT WAMPLER, RUTH ELIZABETH LAYMAN
WAMPLER, Ruth Elizabeth Layman, 82, of Harrisonburg, died Thursday
afternoon, February 18, 1993 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital after a brief
illness. She lived at The Highlands in Sunnyside Retirement Community. Mrs.
Wampler was born October 26, 1910 in Catawba, Va. and was a daughter of the
late Lester L. and Edna Barnhart Layman. She was raised in Roanoke, and
graduated from Bridgewater College in 1931. She taught school in Roanoke and
later in Harrisonburg at Main Street School. On June 9, 1937, she married
Rollin Horace Wampler of Weyers Cave, who died April 1, 1985. After living in
Roanoke, Louisville, Ky. and Weyers Cave, they settled in Harrisonburg and
established Wampler Chemical Company where she served as secretary until her
retirement. After retirement the Wamplers traveled extensively throughout the
world. Mrs. Wampler's last trip was a travel-study seminar to Jordan, Israel
and Egypt in May 1992. Mrs. Wampler was active in the life of First
Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg where she had served as a Deacon and an
Elder. She had also served as president of the Women of the Church, and as a
Sunday school teacher. She was especially devoted to the overseas missions
work of the church and had worked with the Missions Program of Shenandoah
Presbytery. Survivors include a son, Jeffrey R. Wampler of Princeton, N.J.; a
daughter, Gretchen W. Welch of Harrisonburg; a brother, Parker W. Layman of
Roanoke; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m.
Monday, February 22 at First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg. Dr. John
Sloop and Rev. Rachel Hamburger will officiate. Burial at Pleasant Valley
Church of the Brethren in Weyers Cave will be private. The family will receive
friends anytime at the Welch home and at the church after the memorial service
Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contriubtions may be made to World
Mission Outreach, in care of First Presbyterian Church, 17 N. Court Square,
Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. The Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home is in charge of
funeral arrangements.
