NAMES & CHANGES

Thornhill named chairman of United Way

GLENN O. THORNHILL JR., president of Maid Bess Corp., has been named chairman of the board of the United Way of Roanoke Valley. A member of the board since 1989, he succeeds JAMES W. AREND of Atlantic Mutual Cos.

Other new officers are: vice chairman, ANGELICA D. LLOYD, Shenandoah Life Insurance Co.; and treasurer, JOHN B. WILLIAMSON III, Roanoke Gas Co. Elected as board members were: ROBERT W. GLENN JR., Roanoke Gas Co.; DEANNA GORDON, Roanoke County Schools; DAVID M. GRING, Roanoke College; JAMES W. HARKNESS, Dominion Bankshares Corp.; DR. J. HAYDEN HOLLINSGWORTH, Consultants in Cardiology, P.C.; ROBERT G. LEE, WDBJ-TV; GERALD MEADOWS, General Electric Co. and the Roanoke United Central Labor Council; DELVIS O. "MAC" McCADDEN, USAir Group; JESS NEWBERN, Newbern-Trane; JOHN M. PRESLEY, Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center; LARRY T. RASCHE, Norfolk Southern Corp.; DAVID R. Vipperman has also been elected 1993 campaign chairman. Divisional chairman are: administration, DAVID R. SANGSTON; community problem solving, SUE W. ROBERTSON; marketing and communications, LARRY T. RASCHE; and planning, J. RUDY AUSTIN, Gentry, Locke, Rakes & Moore.

Also, WILLIAM F. HAWKINS, board member and former chairman of the board and fund distribution chairman, has received the F. Wiley Hubbell award for outstanding volunteer service to United Way. He is the only person to have held all three top volunteer posts within the organization.

\ ARCHITECTURE

\ TYE CAMPBELL has been promoted to senior associate and director of engineering at Sherertz Franklin Crawford Shaffner in Roanoke. An employee for nine years, he received a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.

\ COMPUTER SERVICES

\ DON HARRISON has been promoted to technical support coordinator and PAUL BEEKMAN has been named branch manager at the Bell Atlantic Business Systems Services office in Roanoke.

Harrison formerly worked as a senior field engineer for the firm. Beekman was previously a senior marketing representative.

Also, four new field engineers have been named. ROGER THOMAS, a former employee of IBM, will service IBM computer equipment in the Roanoke area.

\ JAMES CASH, a former Control Data Corp. employee, will provide service to customers with DEC equipment in the Lynchburg and Roanoke areas.

\ STEVE PENNINGTON and BILL GEORGE, will provide service in the Martinsville area. Pennington has over 15 years service experience with NEC, NCR and IBM computer equipment. George has more than 10 years experience servicing DEC computer equipment. \

FINANCE

\ ELAINE PERDUE DUDLEY, operations manager for Dean Witter Reynolds, has passed the general securities and state law examinations and is now a registered investment representative.

\ INSURANCE

\ BOB L. FAGG has been appointed sales manager at the Roanoke office of Metropolitan Life. Formerly the training director for the Roanoke office, Fagg will now oversee the branch's office in Lynchburg.

Also, SAM HAMPTON and ALAN LEONARD have been named associate branch managers. Both have been with the firm for two years.

\ ADOLPH URBAN JR. has been named senior vice president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia. He will participate in the development of provider managed care networks statewide and implementation of strategic planning goals. He comes to the firm from Ernst and Young in Washington, where he was a partner in charge of the health care financial management consulting practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia. A native of Colonial Heights, he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University. \

MEDICINE\ DR. KHOSRO POURKAVOOS of Roanoke has been certified in the specialty of family practice and named a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice.

\ ORGANIZATIONS

\ KATHY BAER of Baer & Sons Memorials has been named president of the Monument Builders of the Virginia's, the local affiliate of The Monument Builders of North America.

\ REAL ESTATE

\ PAMELA GREENWOOD CUMMINGS has joined Hall Associates in Roanoke. Formerly employed by Goodman Segar Hogan in Norfolk, she most recently worked with Cumins & Co. in Roanoke. Her experience includes residential and commercial development, sales, leasing and management.
