TRIBE REACHES PEACE TREATY WITH INDIA

A primitive tribe that has been fighting for independence in northeastern India since 1987 signed an agreement Saturday ending its insurrection.

The settlement was another victory for Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao against India's many guerrilla groups.

Militants in the Bodo tribe, which practices witchcraft and black magic, agreed to surrender their weapons and end attacks that have killed more than 1,000 people.

In return, the tribe may form an autonomous council to control many issues regarding its socioeconomic and cultural development.
