COVINGTON ROUTS HIGHLAND COUNTY
Even with top scorer Van Wallace out with an ankle injury, Covington still routed the Highland County Rams 93-59 Saturday to capture their fifth straight boys' basketball victory.The Cougars (12-8, 8-4) led 48-39 early in the third quarter when they went on a 22-0 run. When Highland County looked up again, the score was 70-39.
Keeno Jones led the Cougars with 18 points.
Highland County (2-18, 2-10) had all scorers in double-digits during the Pioneer District contest. Chris Schill scored 14 points. John Colaw and Jamie Botkin scored 12 points each, John Hull had 12 points and Brad Hull added 10.
\ Mountain Empire
\ Giles 71, Shawsville 46: At Pearisburg, guards Timmy Williams and Marty Smith each scored 12 points to lead the Spartans to a victory over the Shawnees in the play-in game to get to the first round of the tournament.
Giles (9-12) took command early, leading 17-9 after the first quarter and 30-18 at halftime. Darrell Bibb paced Shawsville (2-19) with 19 points.
Giles will meet Floyd County on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Christiansburg High School. \
Narrows 71, Rocky Gap 58: In Narrows, the Green Wave earned a spot in the tournament by cruising to the victory over the Eagles (1-20) in a play-in game.
Narrows (8-13) will face Grayson County on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of the district tournament at Christiansburg High.
Jeff White scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half as Narrows gradually pulled away. Sean Harris added 16 points, Scott Vaught 15 and Chad Fleeman 12. Eric Faulkner paced Rocky Gap with 14, and Frank Nunley had 13.
\ ODACS
\ Gateway Christian 74, Temple Christian 29: The Crusaders cruised to the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools championship, held at Lakeside Baptist in Roanoke.
Gateway (14-1) jumped out to a 26-4 first-quarter lead over the Abingdon school and was never threatened. Sam Moore led the way with 17 points. Gateway now heads to Richmond for next weekend's ODACS state tournament. \
