GRETNA WINS REGION III VOLLEYBALL TITLE

Gretna defeated host Jefferson Forest 15-4, 15-6 for the Region III volleyball championship. In the semifinals, also Saturday, Jefferson Forest defeated Bassett 9-15, 15-7, 15-5 and Gretna upended Salem 15-7, 12-15, 15-13. Jefferson Forest next plays at Region IV winner Gate City and Gretna plays host to the Region IV runner-up Blacksburg.

Gate City defeated Blacksburg 15-10, 15-12 to win the Region IV volleyball championship. In the semifinals, Gate City (20-2) edged Christiansburg 16-14, 17-15. Blacksburg (15-6) beat Tazewell 15-5, 15-3.

George Wythe defeated Northwood 15-3, 15-9 to win the Region C volleyball championship. In the quarterfinals, George Wythe defeated Grayson County 15-5, 15-1 and Northwood beat James River 15-8, 15-5. In the semifinals, George Wythe knocked off Glenvar 15-9, 15-4 and Northwood defeated Floyd County 15-10, 18-16. George Wythe (24-0) will play host to the Region D runner-up. Northwood (13-7) will play the Region D champion.

John Logan won two individual races and anchored two relay teams as North Cross defeated Randolph-Macon Academy of Lynchburg 108-55 to win the Virginia Independent Conference swimming championship at the Carter Athletic Center. Logan won the 50-meter freestyle in 22.68 seconds and the 100-meter freestyle in 50.83. He also swam with the winning 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle teams.
