JAMES MADISON WINS FENCING TITLE

James Madison won the Virginia Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Tournament at Hollins. JMU had 48 points to second-place Sweet Briar's 30. The top eight fencers will compete for the individual title today. They are Elaine Schoka, Julie Benson, Lynn Mulhern and Julia Tock of James Madison; Shelly O'Brien and Mary Gordon Gill of Sweet Briar; and Angie O'Kernick of Hollins.

\ Robert Gibbs, a ninth-grader at Blacksburg High, earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a victory in the 16-and-under Middle Atlantic Tennis Championships No. 2 in Newport News. Gibbs defeated David Martin of Baltimore 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16 at Center Court Racquet Club. He will face No. 3 seed Tony Hur of Potomac, Md., in today's quarterfinals.
