DAYTON STOPS RAMPAGE 7-5
The Roanoke Valley Rampage had a colossal upset in the making, but it bombed out amid a second-period scoring spree that rallied Dayton to a 7-5 East Coast Hockey League victory Saturday night.The Rampage (12-40-1) have lost 25 straight games on the road and is 1-25-1 in its travels this season. Since Nov. 11, 1992, Roanoke Valley has lost 35 of 41 games overall. Dayton (32-19-5) was in second place behind Toledo in the Western Division going into Saturday night's games.
Roanoke Valley put on a first-period offensive show, outshooting the Bombers 25-13 and taking a 3-2 lead on three goals by Ken House. House gave the Rampage a 2-0 lead in the first 6:10.
Dayton tied the score at 3 on Dave Smith's goal at 9:38 of the second period, and Shayne Green and Doug Evans each scored for a 5-3 lead. After the Rampage's Denis Skapski made it 5-4 at 6:47 of the period, Smith scored again for a 6-4 lead.
The teams exchanged goals in the third period.
\ NOTES: The Bombers, coached by former Roanoke Valley coach Claude Noel, won the teams' only previous meeting 7-2 in Vinton. . . . The Rampage ends a stretch of three road games in three days in Ohio today against Toledo. The Storm will be out to avenge a 4-3 shootout loss on Feb. 12 in Vinton. \
