ROANOKE CATHOLIC GIRLS FALL SHORT 50-39

At Lynchburg, Mandy Ferguson scored 23 points and Shannon Carroll added 11 as Lynchburg Christian knocked off Roanoke Catholic 50-39 and won its ninth consecutive Blue Ridge Conference girls' basketball title Saturday.

Lynchburg Christian (18-2) jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter and coasted to the win. The Celtics are 19-4, 12-3.

Abby Dickson scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Roanoke Catholic. With starters Jackie Hinman and Liz Landry injured, the Celtics started two sophomores, two freshmen and an eighth-grader.

Named to the all-tournament team were Ferguson, Mandy Britt and Missy Arnold of Lynchburg Christian; Dickson and Teresa Monsour of Roanoke Catholic; Emily deGuzman and Sarah Lexa of Holy Cross; and Brandi Surkamer of Roanoke Valley Christian. \

Holy Cross 45, Roanoke Valley Christian 40: Michelle Miller scored 15 points and Emily deGuzman added 10 as the Gaels downed the Eagles in the third-place game. Roanoke Valley Christian trailed through three quarters and rallied in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough. Guard Brandi Surkamer led the Eagles with 17 points. Tiffany Hogan had 13. \

John Worley scored 21 points and Scott Nackie added 17 as the Knights slipped past the Celtics to earn a berth in the championship game of the state Catholic B tournament.

Roanoke Catholic led 51-35 at the end of three quarters, but Peninsula Catholic outscored the Celtics 34-17 in the fourth quarter to capture the win.

Greg Broderick led Roanoke Catholic with 20 points. Mike Clark scored 15, Justin Thompson had 14 and Mike Kolnok had 12 points. \

ODACS

\ Gateway Christian 74, Temple Christian 29: The Crusaders cruised to the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools championship, held at Lakeside Baptist in Roanoke. Gateway (14-1) jumped out to a 26-4 first-quarter lead over the Abingdon school and was never threatened. Sam Moore led the way with 17 points. \
