COVINGTON FUDGE HOUSE TO RECEIVE HISTORIC LISTING

The Virginia Board of Historic Resources has voted to list The Fudge House in Covington on the Virginia Landmarks Register.

The Virginia Register is an educational tool, informing both the owner and the local government that a historic resource in their locale is an asset worth preserving.

Located at 620 Parklin Drive and owned by Joseph Patton Loving Jr., The Fudge House acquired its present appearance by the early 20th century.

Conrad and Christian Fudge, sons of Conrad Fudge Sr. of Rockingham County, built a two-story, weatherboarded log house in 1798. Conrad Fudge, a blacksmith and farmer, lived in the house until his death in 1849. In the 1820s, he enlarged the house, adding a large brick section and building new chimneys.

His son, Andrew, inherited the property and continued the family farming operations while serving as clerk of the county and circuit courts. Joseph Fudge, Andrew's son, enlarged the house again in 1897, giving it the Victorian look it retains today with a hipped roof, enlarged windows and decorative trim.
