STAFF DOCTORS PAID AVERAGE OF $140,000

The average staff physician on salary at a hospital, health maintenance organization or group practice in 1992 received pay and bonuses totaling $139,732, according to a survey released Tuesday by the William M. Mercer Co.

The findings by Mercer, an actuarial and employee-benefits firm, were based on data submitted by 112 health-care organizations covering nearly 5,800 physicians nationwide. It covered only cash compensation - not fringe benefits - of salaried physicians, and excluded self-employed doctors, doctors employed by the federal government, and residents and interns.

The American Medical Association reported last year that the average self-employed non-federal physician earned $185,600 in 1990 after expenses.

The highest-paid group of salaried physicians, Mercer reported, were reproductive endocrinologists, doctors involved with hormones affecting fertility, at $259,750 median compensation.

Salaried cardiothoracic surgeons were next at a median of $259,700, followed by radiologists, $183,150; anesthesiologists, $179,900; otolaryngologists, $178,700; obstetrician-gynecologists, $166,100; general surgeons, $145,300; pathologists, $144,550; and emergency physicians, $121,000. Salaried psychiatrists made $108,150; family practitioners, $100,600; and pediatricians, $98,037.

A separate Mercer survey found that median pay and bonuses of the top legal officers employed by businesses of all sizes totalled $175,800 in 1992.
