First Step Computers wins Apple contractA Richmond company has won exclusive education sales rights for the Virginia-Maryland-District of Columbia area from Apple Computer Inc. and will put its Virginia-region headquarters in its Roanoke office.
First Step Computers will more than double its sales with the new Apple contract, said its president, Walter F. Manley III. He said the contract is worth $30 million a year in additional business for the company.
First Step, a private computer systems integration company owned by Manley and James Egle of Richmond, has had offices on Franklin Road in Southwest Roanoke for two years to serve educational clients, including kindergarten through 12th-grade classes in school systems around the region.
First Step is a franchise of MicroAge Inc. of Tempe, Ariz.
There are about six employees in the Roanoke office. A second regional office will be in Bethesda, Md. The company also has offices in Charlottesville and Norfolk. - Staff report
\ Self-serve regular falls to 10-month low
The nationwide average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline has fallen 1 cent since Jan. 19 to $1.093 per gallon, the American Automobile Association said Tuesday.
The price is the lowest recorded since $1.089 per gallon on April 28, 1992.
Since the third week of January, the national average price of self-serve mid-grade unleaded has edged down 0.6 cent to $1.196 per gallon. Self-serve premium unleaded is down 0.9 cent to $1.277 per gallon.
AAA said the average price of full-service regular unleaded rose 2.5 cents to $1.393 per gallon nationwide. Mid-grade unleaded is up 2.3 cents to $1.481 and premium unleaded rose 3.1 cents to $1.516. - Staff report \

\ Federal-Mogul Corp., Southfield, Mich.-based operator of an engine bearings plant in Blacksburg, said Tuesday it has filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission a registration statement for the offering of 5 million shares of common stock. Net proceeds will be used to repay a portion of the $125 million of unsecured indebtedness incurred to finance the acquisition of the assets of the automotive aftermarket business from TRW Inc. in October 1992.
\ Home Shopping Network Inc., St. Petersburg, Fla.-based television retailer with an order-filling warehouse in Salem, on Tuesday named Gerald Hogan its new president and chief executive officer. Hogan was vice chairman of Whittle Communications and before that was with Turner Broadcasting System Inc. in Atlanta.
\ CFW Communications Co., a Waynesboro telephone company operating in the Waynesboro and Clifton Forge areas, on Tuesday declared a 2-for-1 stock split. Shareholders will receive one share of common stock for each share they own on April 21. Certificates for the new shares are to be issued in early May.
