2 MEN KILLED IN ALLEGHANY TRUCK CRASH
Two men died and three people were injured after a tractor-trailer hauling wood chips overturned Monday night on an Alleghany County road and a car slammed into it minutes later, state police said. The truck driver, Toby H. Cox, 26, of Grundy, died at the scene of the 7:55 p.m. accident, said Trooper Mike Hamilton.
Timothy Cline, 28, of Gilbert, W.Va., riding in the passenger seat, suffered massive head injuries. He was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died around 4 p.m. Tuesday, a nursing supervisor said.
Cline's brother, Terry Cline, 16, also of Gilbert, was sitting on a cardboard box between the two, Hamilton said. He was taken to Alleghany Regional Hospital in Clifton Forge, treated and released, a nursing supervisor said.
Hamilton said the truck was heading east up a hill and into a curve on U.S. 60 near Covington when it ran off the road, struck a rock embankment and turned over, spilling its load onto the road. He said the cab of the truck disintegrated when it hit the embankment.
About 10 minutes later, a car slammed into the rear tires of the truck, Hamilton said. Tanya Tyler and Kenneth O'Brien, both of Mississippi, were taken to Alleghany Regional Hospital, where they also were treated and released.
The road was blocked by the accident, and crews worked until 1:30 a.m. to clear the scene.
Hamilton said the truck was traveling too fast and that the surviving brother told him the trio had been drinking. No charges are anticipated.
None of the riders was wearing seat belts, Hamilton said.
