Carly Simon was never so vain as to think she could write a opera - until the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the Kennedy Center asked her to try.The pop singer's "Romulus Hunt" had its premiere last week. The opera includes classical melodies, modern rhythms and one rap song and will run in New York until March 7, when it moves to Washington.
"I would never have thought I would be even slightly capable, much less interested," said Simon, whose hits include "You're So Vain" and "The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of."
And now the producers of "Northern Exposure" have asked her to write an opera for the CBS series, she said. "They want one whole episode to be an opera. I'm actually considering that."
Marilyn Quayle, like the first lady, is using her maiden name these days.
The wife of former Vice President Dan Quayle is going by the name Marilyn Tucker Quayle.
That name appeared on a statement issued by the Indianapolis law firm Krieg DeVault Alexander and Capehart announcing that she has signed on as a partner.
William R. Neale, a partner in the firm and a longtime friend of the Quayles, insisted that the use of her maiden name wasn't new.
"She has [used the name] ever since they got married in law school," he said.
When President Clinton's wife got to Washington, she returned to using the name Hillary Rodham Clinton.
