GOODY'S COMING TO ROANOKE

Goody's Family Clothing Inc. will open two Roanoke Valley stores by early August, a company official confirmed Wednesday.

The Knoxville, Tenn.-based retailer has leased space at Crossroads and Tanglewood malls, said Bill Marks, senior vice president.

Marks said the company will hire about 120 sales clerks and hopes to find its management staff in the area. He said hiring will be handled through the Virginia Employment Commission.

The Crossroads store will occupy 25,868 square feet on the front side of the mall, including space that once housed Sidney's clothing store. The Tanglewood store will be in 28,800 square feet on the second level next to the J.C. Penney store.

Goody's sells national brand, current-season goods. Marks said its prices are 20 percent to 30 percent below those at traditional retail stores.

The company also is one of the world's largest retailers of denim.

Goody's, which first sold public stock in October 1991, has had a store for several years at Market Place shopping center in Christiansburg.

Marks said he has been searching for two Roanoke-area locations for more than a year. He made the agreement with Tanglewood months ago, but contract details were not completed with Crossroads until this week.

Construction will begin at Crossroads on March 1, said Kathy Noll, spokeswoman for the owner, George D. Zamias Co. of Johnstown, Pa. Marks said a similar renovation time is planned at Tanglewood.

Crossroads, the area's oldest mall, also has the prospect of another tenant soon. The Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles is negotiating for 14,000 square feet of space so it can merge its two Roanoke-area offices there.
