FRANKLIN TAPS ADMINISTRATOR ALLEGHANY COUNTY OFFICIAL CHOSEN

Officials will announce today that Macon Sammons, county administrator for Alleghany County since 1985, has been selected as Franklin County's new administrator.

A news conference is scheduled for 9 a.m., according to Gus Forry, a member of the Franklin County Board of Supervisors.

Details were being withheld prior to the announcement, but Forry confirmed Wednesday night that the board decided to hire Sammons after months of searching for an administrator.

"We had a lot of good applicants, and I think we have a real good county administrator with this gentleman," he said.

It will probably be about 45 days before Sammons can leave his job and begin work in Rocky Mount.

He will replace John Lester, who resigned in October after a rocky year as Franklin County's top non-elected official.

County officials received more than 100 applications, and have spent recent weeks interviewing finalists.

Sammons left his job as Manassas city manager in 1985 to become Alleghany County's administrator. He was closely involved in efforts to clean up and close down the Kim-Stan landfill, and also worked on a proposed merger of Alleghany County and Clifton Forge that ultimately was rejected by voters.

Sammons was born in Norfolk and graduated from Shawsville High School. He hold a bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary and a master's in planning and public management from Virginia Tech. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.
