BLAND ADVANCES IN MED
Sixth-seeded Bland outscored Fort Chiswell 34-26 in the second half to notch an upset victory in Wednesday's first round of the Mountain Empire District boys' tournament at Christiansburg.The Rockets missed the front end of two one-and-one free throws in the final 20 seconds, but the Pioneers couldn't get a shot off.
Kevin King pumped in 23 points for Bland (12-9), which trailed 9-0 early and 25-18 at halftime. Brad Harden added 10 points for the winners.
Fort Chiswell (15-6), the tournament's third seed, was led by Jody Burnett's 17 points.
Pioneer District
Bath County 58, James River 46:
At Buchanan, the Chargers missed their first 14 shots, but recovered to beat the Knights in a first-round game.
Mike Edwards paced Bath County (11-11) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jody Stegar paced James River (8-14) with 16 points.
Parry McCluer 95, Highland 56:
At Buena Vista, five players hit double figures in points as the second-seeded Blues wiped out Highland. Nathan Baker scored 17 points to lead Parry McCluer. Chris Schill paced the Rams with 21.
Covington 75, Craig County 50:
At Covington, the Cougars scored the first 17 points of the game and led 24-3 in a rout of Craig County in the first round of the Pioneer District tournament. Keeno Jones led Covington with 23 points. Robbie-Huffman had 16 for Craig County.
