STATE TITLES ON MAT
Seventeen Roanoke Metro wrestlers will be in Richmond Friday and Saturday seeking State Group AAA championships at the Ashe Center.The Metro's largest delegation will be the six Franklin County entries, led by by four Northwest Region champions: Dan Gearhart (135), Thomas Simmons (140), Hasane Menefee (152) and heavyweight Ricky Young.
William Fleming will have three entries, headed by regional champion Keno Sheperd (112). Patrick Henry's only entry will be regional champion Albert Nugue (130), and Cave Spring will have two entries but no regional winners.
North Cross will be at Collegiate High for the Virginia State Private School tournament. The Raiders' five entries will be led by undefeated senior Aaron Lange (189). Lange, who recently won his third straight Virginia Independent Conference title, was second in the state last year at 172 pounds, losing in the finals on an overtime decision.
