12 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO GET BROTHERHOOD/SISTERHOOD AWARDS AWARDS

Twelve students from Roanoke-area high schools will receive the Brotherhood/Sisterhood Youth Awards tonight.

The Roanoke Area Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews has given the awards annually for five years as part of its national Brotherhood/Sisterhood Week celebration.

Recipients are recognized for the amount of time and the service they give to their schools and communities. They also must serve as role models for other youths.

The 1993 recipients are:

Melanie Lynn Hayden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Hayden. A senior at William Fleming High School, Hayden is a cheerleader and member of the Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Future Business Leaders of America. She is on the Roanoke City Youth Advisory Committee and active at Williams Memorial Baptist Church. (Not pictured.)

Kristi Michelle Carter, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Carter. The William Byrd High School senior volunteers at Good Samaritan Hospice and is a church nursery worker and vacation Bible school teacher. She has been a volunteer tutor for her school band and is an assistant recreational soccer coach.

Craig Sheldon Bryant, a James River High School senior and son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy R. Bryant. He is a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician and presents programs on fire safety and first aid to younger children. He is a members of his school's National Honor Society and tends a church garden that is used to provide food for the elderly and shut-ins.

Rebecca Catherine Moore, a senior at Lord Botetourt High School and daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Robert Moore. She has tutored other students in Spanish and English, and is a Sunday school teacher and a pianist for several facilities for the sick. She also has been on several church mission trips.

Michele R. Smith, a Northside High School senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Smith. She is president of the International Culture Association at Northside and organized the Student of the Month program. She also organized an AIDS awareness seminar at her church and has made nightgowns for the City Rescue Mission.

Onawa M. Miller, a Patrick Henry High School senior and daughter of Preston Miller. She volunteers at a nursing home and with Festival in the Park. She also is a member of the student government association at school and is active in her church.

Stacey Lynn Tickle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Tickle. She is a senior at Glenvar High School and a member of the Keyettes and National Honor Society. She has raised money for students who need expensive medical care and helped plan and plant a garden in memory of a Glenvar teacher. She also collects food for Roanoke Area Ministries, helps with Red Cross Bloodmobile visits and helps with the Adopt-A-Highway project.

Mary Laneve Molinary, a Roanoke Catholic School junior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Molinary. She has worked with Carousel, Roanoke Catholic's annual fund-raiser and with the National Railway Historical Society. She also works as a volunteer at a stable, helping to groom horses.

William Thomas Shaner Jr., a Salem High School senior and son of Mr. and Mrs. William Shaner Sr. He is a junior crew member with the Salem Rescue Crew and an active member at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Jenny Leonard, a senior at Roanoke Valley Christian Schools and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Leonard. She is a Red Cross and Science Museum volunteer and is active in her church youth group and in Teenage Republicans.

Christine A. Tennant, a senior at Cave Spring High School and daughter of Robert J. and Joyce Tennant. She has organized fund-raisers for ill students and a Christmas stocking drive and food drives for the Salvation Army. She also has worked with her church youth group to restore a home for a senior citizen and deliver food to needy. She also visits an elderly woman once a week "to keep her company." She is a member of the Key Club and the Glevar Drill Team.

Christina Nordt, a junior at North Cross School and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nordt. She does volunteer work with the TRUST Teen Line, the West End Community Center and Habitat Humanity.
