THE TIPOFF

TAKE TWO: Christo, internationally renowned artist, will present a slide lecture tonight at 8 in Preston Auditorium of Radford University - if the weather cooperates, something it didn't do two weeks ago, when his talk was initially scheduled.

The lecture is titled "The Umbrellas: Japan-USA, 1984-1991 and Wrapped Reichstag, Project for Berlin." Admission is free.

Photographs, a model, various documents and drawings pertaining to Christo's exhibit, "Wrapped Coast/Little Bay, Sydney, Australia, 1969," will be on view at the school's Flossie Martin Gallery through March 5.

For the umbrellas project, Christo installed 1,340 19-foot blue umbrellas in a valley in Japan and 1,760 yellow umbrellas in a valley north of Los Angeles. They were opened at the same time and after 21 days they were removed. The materials were recycled.\ \ PRINCE OF PERPLEXITY: "Hamlet," the William Shakespeare play, opens tonight at 8 at Mill Mountain Theatre in Center in the Square in Roanoke.

It continues through March 14. Show time Tuesdays through Thursdays is 7:30. It's 8 on Fridays and Saturdays, and matinees are Saturdays and Sundays at 2.

Tickets run from $11 to $17. Call 342-5740.\ \ IT'S THE LIPS: Horns will be featured prominently in Saturday night's 8 o'clock concert by the New River Valley Symphony in Burruss Auditorium at Virginia Tech.

There's no admission charge, but donations are requested. Soft drinks, desserts and snacks will be sold. Call 342-4268.\ \ IN THE BEGINNING: The Piedmont Choral Society will present Franz Joseph Haydn's oratorio "The Creation" on Sunday afternoon at 4 at Martinsville Junior High School auditorium.
