GET READY FOR PROSPECTS, WYTHE TOLD
An Appalachian Power Co. industrial development representative on Thursday told the Wythe County Joint Industrial Development Authority that the county should be prepared for new industrial prospects."It's been tough out there," said Frank Crockett of Apco, but "the recession won't last forever, so we've got to be prepared, we've got to be ready to move."
Wythe has been more fortunate than many Southwest Virginia counties in weathering the recession, he said. Even when layoffs have happened, they have been followed by rehirings.
More than look at just land in industrial parks, he said, "most prospects are looking at buildings first. And second. And third." Wythe is in a good position by having a shell building at its Fairview Industrial Park, he said.
The authority spent 30 minutes in closed session with representatives of the Carroll County Industrial Development Authority and the Board of Supervisors discussing a prospective industry for the Ivanhoe Industrial Park that lies in both Wythe and Carroll counties. No public action followed the closed meeting.
The authority also agreed to schedule a work session to go through its recently completed draft of an economic development strategic plan for Wythe County.
