AUSTIN LOSES IN 3RD ROUND
Tracy Austin found out youth and power rule women's tennis these days in a 6-1, 6-0 loss Thursday to Stephanie Rottier at the Evert Cup in Indian Wells, Calif.Rottier reeled off 11 straight games to end Austin's comeback in the third round. The 30-year-old was playing her first tournament in four years.
"She was on top of me all the time - very hard, very deep in the corners," Austin said. "I'm disappointed. I hate losing."
Her reputation as a former world No. 1 and two-time U.S. Open champion helped intimidate previous opponents Rennae Stubbs and No. 2 seed Katerina Maleeva, ranked 12th in the world. However, Rottier, a 19-year-old from the Netherlands ranked 76th in the world, didn't appear the least bit rattled.
