LATE SHOT PROPELS NORTH CROSS
Sophomore forward Hal Johnson made a 12-foot jumper with two seconds left Thursday, lifting North Cross to a 69-67 boys' basketball victory over Timberlake Christian in the first round of the Virginia Independent Conference Tournament.Timberlake trailed 42-35 at halftime and 60-54 after three quarters, but outscored the Raiders 13-9 in the final quarter. Travis Stickle, who led Timberlake with 16 points, had tied the score on a free throw with 20 seconds remaining.
Junior Marcus Cardwell had 13 points and nine assists for North Cross (21-6). Aaron Marley added 11 points and Tyler Pugh 10.
For Timberlake (13-12), Mike Kelley had 14 points, Marty Chandler 11 and Tommy Middleton 10.
In other first-round games: Hargrave Military defeated Eastern Mennonite 75-72, Fishburne Military topped Lynchburg Christian 69-43 and Holy Cross beat Miller School 75-57.
North Cross will face Holy Cross in the semifinals tonight at 8:15 at Lynchburg College. Hargrave plays Fishburne in the opener at 6:30 p.m. \
