GRAY SUES TO STOP LICENSE REVOCATION
Dr. William G. Gray gave up his license to practice medicine in Virginia, but he is suing the state Board of Medicine to prevent it from revoking it.In a lawsuit filed in Franklin County Circuit Court, Gray's attorney claims the medical board cannot go forward with its scheduled March 15 revocation hearings against Gray because it no longer has jurisdiction over him.
Gray surrendered his license last month in an agreement with Franklin County prosecutor Cliff Hapgood. The agreement allowed Gray to avoid trial - and a possible life sentence - on charge of forcible sodomy; it allowed Hapgood to make sure that Gray could no longer practice medicine in Virginia.
Regardless of the outcome of Gray's battle with the medical board, Hapgood said, Gray can never practice medicine in Virginia again. "He's not a doctor," Hapgood said.
But to Gray, the difference between surrendering his license and having it revoked is significant.
If the board revokes Gray's license, other states might automatically follow suit. California and North Carolina are the other states in which Gray has licenses. If Gray surrenders his license, the other states may not necessarily revoke his license to practice.
