SCHOOLS CHIEF OKS 1 LAST YEAR IN OFFICE
The Roanoke County School Board squeezed one more year out of Superintendent Bayes Wilson on Thursday, voting to offer him - at his preference - a one-year contract for the 1993-94 school year. The year will be his last, said Wilson, 61, who intends to retire.
"After 37 years, one year is about all I've got left," Wilson said. "If I last that long, I'll be lucky."
Wilson has been superintendent since 1980. Last year he had two major operations, one a heart bypass.
"It makes you start thinking a little bit," Wilson said.
A one-year contract is rare. In closed-session contract negotiations with Wilson on Thursday, the board "started with four years and worked down," board member Charlsie Pafford said.
"We arm-twisted and one year was about all we could get out of him," board Chairman Frank Thomas said.
The board had tried to encourage Wilson to extend his contract. Last year, in an effort to reward him beyond his $90,640 salary, the board approved a one-time retirement bonus for Wilson that could be worth more than $50,000.
Thursday, the board authorized school officials to draw up Wilson's 1993-94 contract for the board's consideration.
