BRIDGEWATER REELS IN MARLINS 57-47

Win or lose, the Bridgewater women's basketball team won't advance past today's Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament championship game against Roanoke.

Virginia Wesleyan found out Friday that the Eagle seniors would not be robbed of their final 40 minutes of college basketball.

Bridgewater's three seniors - Katie McDaniel, Tricia Weatherholtz and Julie Hanover - combined for 40 points, 33 rebounds, five assists and seven steals to lead the second-seeded Eagles to a 57-47 win over the Marlins in a semifinal game at the Salem Civic Center.

The ODAC women's champion does not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament and, with 11 losses, Bridgewater will not receive an at-large bid.

"Our seniors had been here before as freshmen and sophomores," said Eagles' coach Laura Mapp. "They were very, very anxious to get back."

Hanover had 12 of her 14 points in the first half, which ended with Bridgewater ahead 32-20. Weatherholtz had 10 of her 14 in the second half, when the Eagles held off a pair of Marlin rallies.

Virginia Wesleyan (16-9) cut its deficit to 44-39 with 9:31 to play, but Weatherholtz scored four straight points to pad the lead. The Marlins sliced the score to 50-45 with 4:21 to go, but managed only two more points the rest of the way.

"It helped us to jump out to a lead, so we had room for mistakes later," said Weatherholtz, who had 11 rebounds and five steals. "When they made their runs, we kept our poise and stayed confident."

McDaniel had 12 points with 13 rebounds. Christy Osborne, a former Lord Botetourt player, had 10 points.

The Marlins (16-9) shot 21-for-67, including 1-for-16 from 3-point range, and committed 20 turnovers.

"We had them on the ropes late and I thought we'd get it," said Virginia Wesleyan coach Tom Palombo. "But they handled the pressure well and they had some seniors who didn't want to lose.

Kim Kumpf led the Marlins with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Shannon Koutas added 10 points and nine rebounds. \
