FERRUM UPSET IN DIXIE PLAY
The Ferrum Panthers shot themselves in the foot Friday, but that was about the only thing their shots hit.Ferrum, the defending champion and top seed at the Dixie Conference men's basketball tournament, shot 28 percent for the game and was ousted by North Carolina Wesleyan 56-52 in the semifinals at Christopher Newport College in Newport News.
The Bishops utilized the shot clock on most every possession to keep the run-and-gun Panthers off balance and out of synch.
Ferrum shot 23 percent in the first half, finished 2-for-19 on 3-point attempts and had no players score in double figures. Quincy Quick led the Panthers with nine points on 3-for-13 shooting. Jerry Scarborough was 4-for-14 from the floor and Mike Robertson went 2-for-12.
North Carolina Wesleyan (12-13) had four players in double figures, led by Jason Hall with 13. The Bishops led 31-24 at halftime.
Ferrum (18-7) now must hope for an at-large bid to the Division III national tournament.
