FIRE AT SALEM GARAGE CAUSES HEAT DAMAGE
A fire that began when a car ignited in a Salem auto-repair garage Friday morning caused heat damage to other vehicles and to the building. The fire at Miller's Garage on Maple Avenue was reported at 10:35 a.m.
When the Salem Fire Department arrived, smoke was pouring from the roof, said firefighter Bob St. Clair.
He said Charles D. Miller, who runs the shop, had just started to work on the car. He left the shop when he got a call to pick up another vehicle. The fire started while Miller was gone. St. Clair said the blaze started in the car, but firefighters weren't sure how.
Most of the $41,000 worth of damage - to the building, two trucks and three motorcycles - was caused by heat, St. Clair said. The heat was so intense it boiled some of the paint on the trucks and melted the plastic covering of the motorcycles, as well as some of their plastic fixtures.
Later Friday, in Roanoke, firefighters responded to a blaze that began when a 3-year-old playing with a cigarette lighter ignited a bed, authorities said.
District Fire Chief Garry Basham said the child, its mother and two other children, ages 18 months and 11 years, were lucky to get out of the house in the 2500 block of Brook Street Northeast.
Damage to the house and its contents was estimated at $25,000.
