New York magazine says friends and relatives of Lee Atwater, the Republican National Committee chairman who died in 1991 from a brain tumor, are looking into whether the tumor could have been caused by his use of a cellular phone. "He practically lived on the phone," a source told the magazine. "Some people are thinking they might have a lawsuit against the phone manufacturers."

Clint Eastwood will star in his next movie as a sheriff who tracks down an escaped convict played by Kevin Costner. Eastwood, who also will direct, is scouting locations around Austin, Texas. Filming will begin in the spring.

Dustin Hoffman will offer a tribute to Arthur Ashe next week on ESPN's telecast of the American Sports Awards.

"We asked him if he would do it because of his eloquence and love of tennis, and to our delight, he accepted," ESPN Vice President Chris LaPlaca said Thursday. The show will be broadcast live from New York on March 4.

Ashe, the only black man to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, died on Feb. 6 of AIDS-related pneumonia.

David Letterman and George Wendt of "Cheers" also will appear on the show. Letterman will do a sports-oriented Top 10 list.
