JAPAN'S RECESSION IS `POETIC JUSTICE'

IN REFERENCE to your Feb. 1 news article, "Japanese see recession's cut in human terms":

I would just like to ask: What kind of people (or politics) allows for leaders calling hard-working Americans "lazy" when their own people are taught that when you don't succeed, give up and "lay down in front of a commuter train"?

Most of us have been digging ourselves out of one hole after another. We are constantly bombarded with situations and difficulties, but "average" Americans stand up and fight to provide for our families.

I can't feel sorry for the people in Japan or their leaders, knowing that the one Japanese business leader solely responsible for the demise of the American television-manufacturing business is one of their national heroes. It would stand to reason that this is a nationwide goal for them, and for that reason I declare poetic justice has been served. JAMES MAGUIRE ROANOKE
