TROOPERS MOURN DEATH OF VETERAN
Police officers from across the country joined family and friends Saturday in mourning Virginia state Trooper Jose M. Cavazos, who was shot to death last week during a traffic stop.Cavazos, 50, a 10-year veteran of the police force, was nearing retirement when he was gunned down after pulling over a car Wednesday off an Interstate 95 exit ramp near Dale City.
"He paid the ultimate sacrifice," state police Chaplain Preston Everhart told hundreds of mourners who packed St. James Episcopal Church.
He urged government officials across the nation to take action to prevent future slayings of law enforcement officers across the nation.
"We have become sitting ducks," Everhart said. "I think I can speak for all of us. We're tired of it."
Police cars lined Warrenton's downtown streets as officers from as far as California gathered for the morning funeral services.
