WHO LOOKED AT THE POLL

To help us interpret the results of the Roanoke Valley Poll, we called on a dozen people, some from academia, some from the world of business and politics - but all with some insight into the Roanoke Valley and the economy.

1. GERALD BALILES is a former governor of Virginia. He now practices law in Richmond, where he specializes in international trade. He is a native of PatrickCounty.

2. SUSAN BROOKER-GROSS heads the geography department at Virginia Tech. Her speciality is urban geography, the study of why cities evolve the way they do.

3. PAULA BROWNLEE is the former president of Hollins College. She now heads the American Association of Colleges in Washington, D.C.

4. MARY CARTER is a Republican political operative from Henry County. Her campaigns include managing state Sen. Brandon Bell's victory in the Roanoke Valley in 1991. She sits on the board of directors of the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation.

5. BOB de VOURSNEY is from the University of Virginia's Center for Public Service, where he advises localities on economic development. His background is in political science.

6. WADE GILLEY is the president of Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. He has written widely on the connection between universities and economic development and served as secretary of education under Gov. John Dalton. He is a native of Fries and grew up in Roanoke.

7. LINWOOD HOLTON is a former governor of Virginia. He now heads the state's Center for Innovative Technology in Northern Virginia. He grew up in Big Stone Gap and once practiced law in Roanoke.

8. MARY HOUSKA teaches economics at Hollins College. She studies the Western Virginia economy.

9. HUGH KEOGH heads the Virginia Chamber of Commerce in Richmond. Previously, he headed the state's economic development office.

10. DARREL MARTIN was one of Virginia's most successful Democratic political operatives in the 1970s and 1980s. He managed Gerald Baliles' campaign for governor in 1985 and later was an aide to Baliles. He now is assistant to the president at Virginia Tech.

11. REGINALD SHAREEF teaches organizational behavior at Radford University. He grew up in Roanoke, where he still lives.

12. HARRY WILSON teaches political science at Roanoke College and heads the college's Center for Community Service. Since 1991, he has overseen the Roanoke Valley Poll.
