OBIT SMITH, GEORGE EDWARD

SMITH, George Edward, 70, of Roanoke, died Saturday, February 27, 1993 in a local hospital. He was a member and deacon of Hollins Road Baptist Church. He served his country during World War II as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. He retired as captain in the Roanoke City Fire Department after 27 years of service. During his retirement, he was well known as a clockmaker. He is survived by his beloved wife, Iris Nicely Smith; mother-in-law, Beulah Fulcher; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Sandra Smith, Shawnee Mission, Kansas; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Bill Dellinger, Milford, Del., Linda and Mark Saunders, Roanoke, and Connie and David Wilkerson, Richmond, Va.; a grandson, Alan Smith Jr.; four granddaughters, Beth Dellinger Wood, Robyn Dellinger, Karen Smith and Jennifer Saunders; a great-grandson, Kyle Wood; five sisters, Mae Peters, Annie Richards, Mattie Gilliams, Mary Bowers, and Effie Thompson; two half sisters, Mable Heath and Alice Holt; two half brothers, Amos Smith and Sam Smith and many friends. He was born in Long Branch, Franklin County, the son of the late Cora Dilly Shively Smith and Charles Andrew Smith on February 22, 1923. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, March 1, 1993 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Mark Washington and Rev. Charles R. Doyle officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Oakey's North Chapel 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
