Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week; and in the Christian tradition, many programs to recall the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus are scheduled in Roanoke Valley churchesOn Monday, the first night of Passover will be observed in Jewish homes as a remembrance of the deliverance of God's people from Egyptian tyranny.
Congregations, such as Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox, that adhere to the Eastern Orthodox schedule will begin celebration of Easter on April 18.
\ MAPLE STREET BAPTIST CHURCH, 902 Fairfax Ave. N.W., has scheduled community Holy Week services Wednesday through April 9 at 7 nightly. Speakers respectively will be the Revs. Marvin Fields, Alfred S. Prunty and Paul E. Johnson.
On Easter morning at 6, a sunrise service will be led by the Rev. Thomas A. Woods Sr. Each guest minister will bring a choir from his church.
\ A LIVING CRUCIFIXION SCENE, a tradition at First Church of God, will be presented on the front lawn at 5008 Hildebrand Road N.W. on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday nights from 8 to 9:30.
\ AN EASTER PAGEANT, "The 12 Tribes of Israel," will be presented Sunday at 4 p.m. at High Street Baptist Church on Florida Avenue Northwest. The Sanctuary Choir will sing, and the Revs. Noel Taylor, Ulas Broady, Travis Hairston, C.C. Morgan, Richard Poindexter and Samuel Robinson will narrate. The program is free.
\ UNITY OF ROANOKE VALLEY will begin services to celebrate Jesus' resurrection Wednesday at 7 p.m. with with Communion. Child care will be provided.
A meditation on Jesus' last words is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. on Good Friday. Easter Sunday will begin with a sunrise service on the patio at 2200 Green Ridge Road. A light breakfast will be served at 7:45.
Traditional flower services will begin at 9 and 11 a.m.
Unity also has completed a program of interior renovation and remodeling. Included is relocation of the library, new lighting, painting, enlarged rest rooms and serving area.
\ ROANOKE VALLEY CATHEDRAL OF PRAISE, 1913 Williamson Road N.W., will hear the Rev. Bennie S. Triplett, song writer and evangelist, during Holy Week revival services, Sunday through Wednesday. Worship will begin nightly at 7, and on Sunday at 6.
\ FRIEND DAY will be observed Sunday at First Wesleyan Church, 3706 Peters Creek Road N.W. The promotion to bring new members will include programs by Dwight Robertson, founder and president of Kingdom Building Ministries for youth and young adults. He will speak at both the 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. services.
Robertson, a TV musician on the "Day of Discovery" program, also will preach at First Wesleyan on Monday and Tuesday nights at 7. A nursery will be provided.
\ HOPE IS ALIVE, a cantata, will be sung Easter Sunday at 11 a.m. at Bethany Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), at 3115 Fleming Ave. N.W. The musical drama is directed by Steve Fulton.
\ OAKLAND BAPTIST CHURCH, will offer performances of an Easter musical, "Now I See You," at 7 p.m. April 10 and 11. The Adult Choir and a drama team are presenting the performances at the church at 3623 Roundhill Ave. N.W.
\ THE REV. THOMAS A. WOODS SR. will mark his 20th anniversary as pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church tonight through Sunday. The Rev. Paul E. Johnson and the choir of Williams Memorial Baptist Church will lead worship tonight at 7. On Friday at 7 p.m., several choirs will provide special music.
The Rev. Harold G. Preston and the choir of Wrightsville Baptist Church of Covington will lead Palm Sunday service at 3:30 p.m.

\ JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., has scheduled a Palm Sunday musical at 6 p.m. with several guest choral groups as well as the host choirs performing. Usher Board 2 is the sponsor.
\ JOEL BUFFINGTON, formerly of Lakeland, Fla., has joined the staff of Lakeside Baptist Church in Salem. The 27-year-old will serve as associate minister in charge of youth work. Buffington will work with the Rev. Art Hearne, senior pastor.
