KIWANIS NAMES ALL-STAR BASKETBALL TEAM
Fleming's Carlos Rhodes and Salem coach Charles Morgan have taken top honors on the 25th Kiwanis All-Roanoke Valley Basketball Team.Rhodes, who led William Fleming to the state group semifinals, has been named Player of the Year; and Morgan, in his first year at Salem, has been named Coach of the Year.
They and other members of the all-star team will be honored tonight during a banquet sponsored by the Salem and Botetourt County Kiwanis clubs.
The other team members, selected by 11 Roanoke Valley coaches, are: Salem's Mark Byington and Josh Pugh, Fleming's point guard Derrick Hines, William Byrd's David Robertson and Patrick Henry's Shannon Taylor.
Sherman Lea is the Official of the Year, and North Cross will get the Team Sportsmanship Award.
Northside's Walt Derey and Kelly Dampeer, Cave Spring's Robbie Hibbs, Glenvar's Brad Melton and North Cross' Marcus Caldwell are on the second team. North Cross' Mike Bryan and Cave Spring's Matt Metheny have received honorable mention.
Unsung Heroes from each school are: Dusty Beekman, Cave Spring; Greg Broderick, Roanoke Catholic; Wes Jones, Glenvar; Ryan Cook, North Cross; Lloyd Moore, James River; Chris Lester, William Byrd; Greg Pickeral, Northside; Shawn McMahon, Salem; Phillip Lacey, William Fleming; Jeff Cronise, Lord Botetourt; and Chris Boyd, Patrick Henry.
In the 25 years of the all-star team, Morgan is the only person to be named both player and coach of the year. He was player of the year in 1973, when he won all-state honors at the former Andrew Lewis High School.
Morgan led the Spartans to their first group Blue Ridge District title in his first year as coach. He formerly coached 14 years at Science Hill High in Johnson City, Tenn.
Hines is a sophomore and Byington is a junior, but the other all-stars are seniors. Robertson and Pugh are repeaters.
Rhodes, who led the Colonels in scoring this season with a 19.8 average, has scored more than 1,000 points during his varsity career. He also led the team in steals with more than three a game, and averaged five rebounds.
Byington, who led the Spartans in scoring with a 19.2 average, has scored 994 points during his career and averaged more than four rebounds.
Pugh averaged more than 18 points a game and led Salem in rebounding with an average of 7.6.
Robertson has scored more than 1,100 points in three years of basketball. This season, he led the Terriers to the Blue Ridge District tournament title with averages of 19.9 points and 10 rebounds.
Taylor led the Patriots in scoring with a 15.2 average and in rebounding with an average of 6.1. Hines led Timesland in assists with an average of 8.3. He also averaged more than 11 points per game.
