CAVE SPRING MAY FIELD ITS BEST TEAM YET
Last spring, Gar-Field clobbered Cave Spring 7-0 in the Group AAA Northwestern Region girls' soccer tournament. This year, the Knights have shown indications of being even more competitive and Roanoke's strongest team in the sport.
"We've got 10 starters back, and this will probably be the strongest team to go through Cave Spring in a long time," coach Beth Wilson said.
The Knights are playing Woodbridge during the regular season and hope a game against one of the better programs from the northern part of the region will help the Knights play better down the line.
The top Knight returnees are All-Timesland players midfielder Chanda Ingram and sweeper Sarah Wilke. The Beightol twins - Aimee (defense, midfield, left wing) and Allison (stopper) - also are back, as is goalkeeper Amy Hollar. Tiffany Jackson (forward), a ninth-grade transfer from North Cross, will blend in with the veterans.
"We have a strong freshman class and a lot of Select players on the team," Wilson added.
A look at the other four teams:
\ NORTH CROSS: The Raiders, playing under new coach Ghalen Moore, have All-Timesland junior stopper Brandy Markell back from a team that played around .500 a year ago. Moore, the mother of two sisters who play for Salem, also has returning midfielders Emily Cook and Mary Jennings, and sweeper Emily Kennedy.
\ PATRICK HENRY: The Patriots tied Cave Spring twice during the regular season last year, but lost quite a few seniors from that team. Still, 16 of 20 Patriot players have been in the Select program. Sweeper Melissa Thomas and forward Meredith Bowden were All-Timesland, and Ayisha Whitenack was all-district at stopper. Freshman Carrie Moore at midfielder and halfback will try to fill in for departed Timesland Player of the Year Liz Wedemeyer.
\ ROANOKE CATHOLIC: Dick Hinman is the new coach and has daughters Jackie Hinman and Christy Hinman playing at forwards. The Celtics have 11 returnees, including goalie Bethany Miller, wing Elaine Ronquillo, forward Jennifer O'Mera and back Carolyn Barnhouse. Miller, Ronquillo and the two Hinmans also are playing on the school's softball team.
\ SALEM: The Group AA Spartans will build around sweeper Mary Douglas Meloy, keeper Leanne Cline, wings Erin Jones and Andrea Jones (no relation), stopper Brandy Barber, midfielder Heather Moore and her sister striker-midfielder Amy Moore, back Dana Moulse and striker Becky Rose. The Spartans won only once and tied once, but both games came at the end of the season when a young team started to find itself.
