LONGTIME UVA WRESTLING COACH RESIGNS

George Edwards, the wrestling coach at Virginia since 1969, resigned Wednesday.

Edwards, 51, compiled a record of 156-132-3 and led the Cavaliers to three Atlantic Coast Conference championships. Virginia was 8-4 in 1992-93 and finished fifth in the ACC Tournament.

"I think it's time for a younger coach to take over the head coaching responsibilities of this program," Edwards said. "In a sport like wrestling, you need young coaches that can get down on the mat and work with the wrestlers."

Edwards' resignation is effective June 30. A successor has not been named.
