Mental health award nominations sought

The Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley is seeking nominations for its annual awards honoring those who have made contributions in the area of mental health.

Roanoke Valley individuals and organizations may be nominated in any of the following categories: community service, employer of the year, media, medical, public policy, unsung hero, Robert A. Croxson memorial (for clergy), distinguished service, committee chairman of the year and volunteer of the year.

Nominations must be received by Tuesday, and the awards will be presented during the association's annual awards luncheon May 6. For more information, call 344-0931.

Recycling campaign for phone books starts

The Clean Valley Council has begun its telephone book recycling campaign.

Collection bins are located at all Kroger stores through April 25. The Community Recycling Station at Cycle Systems on Wonju Street also has a separate bin for telephone books.

Last year, 26,200 phone books were recycled in the Roanoke Valley - about 15 percent of the 175,000 new books delivered. The Clean Valley Council's goal this year is 80,000 books.

The campaign is a combined effort of Kroger, Waste Management Inc., Cycle Systems and the Clean Valley Council.

Foster parents needed for preteens, teen-agers

Connections, a youth- and family-service agency, is seeking foster homes for preteen and teen-age boys and girls and pregnant girls.

The foster child's daily living and medical expenses are covered, and foster parents receive a service fee. The agency also provides 24-hour casework support.

A series of classes for those interested in becoming foster parents will begin April 13. The classes, which will be held in the evening, are free and deal with positive foster parenting skills.

LOA seeks volunteers for insurance project

The League of Older Americans Area Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers to help implement the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Project.

The project, which will begin in May, is sponsored by the Virginia Department for the Aging and the State Corporation Commission Bureau of Insurance in cooperation with other agencies and organizations.

Volunteers will be trained to provide answers to older adults and their care givers regarding health insurance. Telephone and in-person counseling will be given on Medicaid and Medicare enrollment, claims filing and decisions on "Medigap" and long-term care insurance policies.

Host families sought for French students

LEC (Loisirs Culturels A L'Etranger), a nonprofit French exchange organization designed to promote international friendship, is seeking host families for English-speaking French students.

The students, ages 13-19, will arrive for a month's stay in July or August. Everyone involved in the program, including the American family, will be fully insured, and parents will be supported by a network of coordinators. American families need only provide room, board and friendship.

Cloverdale Elementary School is seeking Roanoke Valley craftsmento participate in its spring fund-raiser, a Country Fair Craft Show.

LOA elects directors, council members

The League of Older Americans Area Agency on Aging has elected several new members to its board of directors and advisory council.

New board members are: Cecil Addison, Calvin Johnson, Larry Thomson and Betty Trumbo. Re-elected to the board were: Debbie Snead, Reg Hutcherson, David Sangston and Virginia Walton.

William Colvin was elected president of the board. Other officers elected are: John Eure, vice president-elect; Claude Carter, vice president; Claudia Whitworth, secretary; and Murry White, treasurer.

New members of the advisory council are: Frances Banks, Barbara Barnett, William Castle, Sandra Green, Meredith Mills, June Poe, John Sabean, Howard Sumpter and Jerry Powell. Henry Brown was re-elected.

Elaine Caudill was elected chairwoman. Elizabeth Bogle was vice chairwoman, and Ouida Persinger was elected secretary.

Garden club district elects new officers

The Blue Ridge District of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs has elected new officers.

They are: Janice Clem, president; Catherine Buhrman, director secretary; and James Faiszt, director treasurer.

Walk for the Animals scheduled May 22

The Roanoke Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has scheduled its fourth annual Walk for Animals fund-raiser May 22.

Participants - dogs optional - will gather at 10 a.m. at Victory Stadium for the walk along Wiley Drive to Wasena Park and back.
