VEGGIE DIETS DON'T CALL FOR SACRIFICE
THE COMMENTARY on March 8 by Philip D. Oliver ("We can eat meat humanely") was intelligent, clear and humane. However, as a vegetarian of some 25 years, I would like to reflect on his statement: "While I admire vegetarians, I do not share their sacrifice."In my experience vegetarians, myself included, do not feel we are sacrificing much by giving up a meat diet. On the contrary, good vegetarian food is exciting, delicious and, if selected well, far healthier than diets based on meat.
Additionally, I believe one feels both happier and healthier for knowing one has not caused pain and misery for animals, most of whom suffer dreadfully under present factory-farm conditions. ALLYN M. MOSS BLACKSBURG
