700,000 KUWAITI CLAIMS FILED IN IRAQ INVASION
Victims of Iraq's seven-month occupation of Kuwait have filed more then 700,000 claims for damages, losses and suffering, U.N. officials said Thursday.The U.N. Compensation Commission expects more than 1 million claims will be filed before the June 30 deadline, totaling an estimated $100 billion total, said the commission chairman, Ambassador Fernando Valenzuela Marzo of Spain.
He announced the appointment of a panel of nine jurists to begin reviewing individual claims and recommending awards.
Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990 and was driven out by U.S.-led forces about seven months later. - Associated Press
