PARRY MCCLUER RIPS ROCKBRIDGE

At Buena Vista, Parry McCluer parlayed 11 hits and 11 walks into a 17-2 non-district softball victory over visiting Rockbridge County on Thursday.

For the Fighting Blues, Heather Worley went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in, Heather Rhodes tripled among her three hits and scored thrice. Carrie Coleman struck out four while tossing a two-hitter for the Blues (1-1). Shannon Clark had both hits for the Wildcats, who were playing in their opener.

In other softball:

Blair Calvert doubled and tripled among her three hits and drove in six runs to lead North Cross to a 14-1 season-opening Blue Ridge Conference victory over host Carlisle. The Raiders sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning.

At Lynchburg, Lynchburg Christian scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to edge Roanoke Catholic 1-0.

\ BASEBALL: At Wytheville, Ben Campbell pitched a three-hitter and doubled in two runs in a seven-run third inning as Lebanon routed George Wythe 9-1 in a Hogoheegee District game.

At Lynchburg, Gary Wiggins went 3-for-3, belted a home run and had five runs batted in as William Byrd routed E.C. Glass 15-1 in a five-inning game. Chris Carr also had three hits for the Terriers.

At Christiansburg, Jason Basham and Denny Self combined on a three-hitter and struck out 15 as the Demons whipped Graham 7-1. Toby Duncan had two doubles and scored two runs for Christiansburg.

At Blacksburg, five Indians errors led to four unearned runs as Auburn downed Blacksburg 6-4. Danny Dickerson homered for the Eagles and Todd Collins got the win with a complete game eight-hitter, striking out six.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Link Shaw had two goals and three assists, Marty Martin added two goals with an assist and Martinsville's defense limited guest Bassett to one shot on goal in a 10-0 Piedmont District rout.

Todd Lyons scored two goals and Chris Evans had two assists as Blacksburg won it's season opener 5-1 over Northside.

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Lynchburg, Brookville scored 87 points and won a tri-meet over Jefferson Forest (52) and Liberty (19). Toby Fifer of Jefferson Forest won the long jump, high jump, 110-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles and ran a leg on the winning 1,600 relay team. Teammate Billy Smith won the 100 and 200 dashes.
