SPOTSWOOD LEADS AA

TIMESLAND is represented on the All-Group AA boys' basketball list by Martinsville's Maurice Spencer on the first team and three others on the second team.

\ Carey Keyes, who made the winning basket for Spotswood with eight seconds left in the state championship game, is The Associated Press' 1992-93 Group AA boys' basketball player of the year.

Keyes joins Maurice Spencer of Martinsville, Frankie Johnson of Robert E. Lee, Adrian Sensabaugh of Virginia High and Robert Shelton of Louisa on the All-Group AA team chosen in balloting by sportswriters and broadcasters from across the state.

Jim Kramer of Spotswood is the coach of the year.

The second team includes three Timesland players: Mark Byington of Salem, Michael Hunter of Alleghany and Lonzy Robertson of Laurel Park. The others are Natter Miller of Chancellor and Sherman Pannell of Altavista.

Keyes, a 6-foot senior guard, averaged 20 points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals this season. He set two school records: 576 points in a season and 1,053 career points.

Spencer, a 6-2 senior forward, averaged 18 points, four assists and five rebounds for Martinsville in shooting 51 percent from the field. The Bulldogs reached the Group AA tournament semifinals.

Johnson, who made the second team last year as a sophomore, is a 6-5 forward. He averaged 18 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in leading Lee to a 21-2 record. He finished his junior season with 1,306 career points.

Sensabaugh, a 6-2 senior, moved from forward to point guard at mid-season to take control of Virginia High's offense after its center transferred. He averaged 21 points, six rebounds and three assists per game.

Louisa's Shelton, a 6-4 junior guard, averaged 25 points in leading the Lions to their first playoff appearance. He scored 42 points twice.

Kramer took a Spotswood team that never before made it out of the district tournament and turned it into a state champion. Last year, the Trailblazers were 14-8. This year they were 27-1, losing only to Robert E. Lee in the regular season, 67-58.

Hunter, a 6-2 senior guard, led the Blue Ridge District in scoring at 22.1 points a game and was selected the district player of the year for Alleghany. He averaged 3.1 assists and shot 55.9 percent.

Byington, a 6-3 junior forward, averaged 21.8 points and led Salem to the Region III tournament for first time in the school's history. He plays outside and shot 35.2 percent from 3-point range by taking more than seven shots a game.

Robertson, a 6-2 senior guard, paced a balanced Laurel Park team with a 16.6-points average. The Lancers were No. 1 in the state poll for most of the season and reached the Group AA tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
