MAGLIARO DEVELOPS TEACHING EXPERTISE

Perhaps no other discipline in research is as closely linked to teaching as education. For Su Magliaro, that is certainly the case.

Magliaro, assistant professor in the division of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education, specializes in how teachers learn to teach, or, as she describes it, "developmental studies of beginners in their induction years in educational setting."

Her research includes both quantitative and qualitative methods, everything from assessment inventories to videotape analysis of teahing episodes and student behavior. She has developed mentoring programs which allow beginning teachers to benefit from their experienced colleagues, and is now, with a grant from the Virginia Department of Education, applying this model to special educaTtors.

The development of expertise in teaching is a theme which unifies and characterizes the work and accomplishments of Dr. Magliaro.

"Dr. Magliaro's work aptly illustrates the union of all three missions of the university: teaching, research and service. She is just one example of many on campus whose work flies in the face of the supposed dichotomy of teaching and research," says Thomas C. Hunt, director of the curriculum and instruction division.

Magliaro has drawn from her background in several disciplines. She majored in elementary education at East Stroudburg University and bagan her career as a classroom teacher. She bacame a special education teacher and earned a master's degree from Iowa State University. She received her Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in educational psychology.

"She is multitalented in a number of fields - energetc, cpable and thorough," Hunt added,
