CITY'S LAST DAY OF SCHOOL WILL BE A JUNE SATURDAY

The Radford School Board has made it official: The last day of school for all city students will be June 19, a Saturday.

So far this year, students have missed five days due to inclement weather, three of them following the March blizzard.

"We've had no negative comments from parents," said Superintendent Michael Wright in recommending the change. Students will be released two hours earlier than usual on the last day.

In another change caused by excessive bad weather days, the board also informally agreed to modify Radford High School's examination exemption rules for this year only.

Students excused from taking examinations by attending at least 180 school days will not be penalized for an excused absence on a regular exam day.

Normally, even exempted students either have to attend on exam days or take the exam later. Under the one-time change, exempted students with excused absences on an exam day would not have to subsequently take the exam.

In other business, the board reached a milestone of sorts by accepting the school system's 150th tuition student. The city has buoyed foundering enrollments in recent years by accepting out-of-city students as space is available. Nonresident students pay $100 per year to attend city schools.

"We can move on to higher numbers now that we've cracked 150," board Chairman John McPhail said.
