CELEBRATION OF JEFFERSON'S BIRTH PLANNED

Clinch Valley College will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's birth with a two-day program.

Jefferson, born April 13, 1743, founded the University of Virginia, which is Clinch Valley's parent institution.

Professor Emeritus Edward L. Henson Jr. will open the Founder's Day program at 7 p.m. April 12, with a lecture on the history of the college. A reception at the chancellor's home will follow.

A luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. April 13 will be held outdoors near the College Theatre. A 6-foot-long birthday cake, music and an appearance by Jefferson as played by Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts Director David Browning will be a part.

Jennings L. Wagoner Jr., a Jefferson scholar who is professor of education in UVa's Curry School of Education, will speak at 1 p.m. on "Thomas Jefferson and the Purpose of Education." Garrett Shelton, professor of political science at Clinch Valley, will speak at 7 p.m. on "Mr. Jefferson's College." Both talks are at the chapel.
