CELEBRATION OF JEFFERSON'S BIRTH PLANNED
Clinch Valley College will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's birth with a two-day program.Jefferson, born April 13, 1743, founded the University of Virginia, which is Clinch Valley's parent institution.
Professor Emeritus Edward L. Henson Jr. will open the Founder's Day program at 7 p.m. April 12, with a lecture on the history of the college. A reception at the chancellor's home will follow.
A luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. April 13 will be held outdoors near the College Theatre. A 6-foot-long birthday cake, music and an appearance by Jefferson as played by Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts Director David Browning will be a part.
Jennings L. Wagoner Jr., a Jefferson scholar who is professor of education in UVa's Curry School of Education, will speak at 1 p.m. on "Thomas Jefferson and the Purpose of Education." Garrett Shelton, professor of political science at Clinch Valley, will speak at 7 p.m. on "Mr. Jefferson's College." Both talks are at the chapel.
