DEMONS RALLY PAST SALEM IN BASEBALL

At Christiansburg, the Demons scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 6-4 win over Salem in a high school baseball game Friday.

Charlie Shrader pitched the victory with 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, and he added two hits and an RBI. Denny Self had two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI and Brock Whitlock had two hits and an RBI for Christiansburg.

In other baseball:

Sophomore Kris Phillips earned his first career victory, teaming with two relievers on a five-hitter, as Bath County shut out Craig County 7-0 in New Castle. Craig Phillips and Jon Rogers each went 2-for-4 with a home run for the Chargers, who scored five first-inning runs.

Craig County sophomore right-hander Ben Boardwine pitched 6 innings of relief, giving up one earned run and striking out seven. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate.

At Glenvar, right-hander Charlie Carper pitched a complete game two-hitter, striking out five, as Covington shut out Glenvar 4-0. All the Cougars runs were unearned and two in the fifth inning broke a scoreless tie. Covington is 1-2-1; Glenvar is 0-1-1.

At Liberty, Ryan Gilleland, Vince Whorley and Steve Spencer each slugged homers as Jefferson Forest edged Liberty 7-6. Anthony Poindexter picked up the win in relief for the Cavaliers (2-0). Jamie Dooley and Mike Thompson each had two hits for Liberty (1-1).

\ SOFTBALL: At Buchanan, James River scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning and hung on for an 8-7 win over Parry McCluer. Melissa Markham and Amber Vines each had three hits and three RBI for the Knights (2-0). Heather Worley had three hits, including a double, for the Blues (1-2), who led 4-3 after 5 1/2 innings.

At Cave Spring, Jennie Kallio pitched a two-hit shutout as the Knights opened their season with a 2-0 win over Alleghany. Kallio struck out five.

At Wasena Park, Roanoke Catholic scored nine runs in the second inning and blasted North Cross 12-2 in a game called after five inning because of the slaughter rule. For the Celtics, Jackie Hinman had three hits and two RBI; Liz Landry had her third homer of the week and four RBI; and Christy Hinman and Leslie Goad each had two hits and a run scored. Lauren Phelan allowed three hits and earned the win.

At Roanoke Valley Christian, Holy Cross had 18 hits and routed the Eagles 11-1. Michelle Miller hit a home run and Emily DeGuzman went 3-for-3 with three RBI for Holy Cross. RVC committed eight errors.

At Bedford, Liberty and Jefferson Forest ended a Seminole District duel in a 12-12 tie when the game was called because of darkness. Kristy Thompson batted in four runs and JoAnne Harris hit a home run to lead Liberty (2-0-1). Lynelle Slade scored three runs for Jefferson Forest (1-0-1).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At William Byrd, Caleb Taylor and Andy McCaskill scored first-half goals as the Terriers downed Lord Botetourt 2-1. William Byrd (2-0) outshot the Cavaliers 16-3. Joe Rossi scored for Botetourt (1-1).

At Danville, Jeff Flora and Ut Thach scored a goal each as Franklin County defeated G.W.-Danville 2-1. Flora opened Franklin County's scoring attack with an unassisted goal. Brandon Trimyer tied the game for G.W.-Danville and Thach scored the winning goal for Franklin County (2-0) on a penalty kick.

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: At Lexington, Robert Worrell scored 10 goals to lead Rockbridge County to a 13-4 win over William Byrd. Cole Atkins added a goal with four assists.

\ GOLF: Benji Kitts shot a nine-hole total of 42 to claim medalist honors and help Roanoke Valley Christian to a 177-206 Virginia Independent Conference victory over Fishburne Military at Waynesboro Country Club.
