PHOEBUS' FRETT TOPS GROUP AAA GIRLS AGAIN

La'Keshia Frett of Phoebus has been named The Associated Press Group AAA girls' basketball player of the year for the second consecutive season.

Frett, Tajama Abraham of Kecoughtan, Mandy Saunders of Meadowbrook, and Nicole Mitchell and Windsor Coggeshall of James Madison are the 1992-93 All-Group AAA team chosen in balloting by sports writers and broadcasters from across the state. All are seniors.

Pat Deegan of James Madison is the coach of the year.

Kim Stewart of Cave Spring and Jen Terry of West Springfield repeat as second-team members. Tye Hall of Centreville, LaSonia Morris of John Marshall and Marqueetta Randolph of William Fleming round out the team.

Randolph, a 6-0 senior, was the Roanoke Valley District's co-player of the year, averaging 21.3 points and 14.1 rebounds. She shot 44 percent from the field and 73 percent from the free-throw line. Randolph is being recruited by Radford and several other Division I schools.

Stewart, a 5-4 senior, averaged 16.7 points a game and led Cave Spring to its sixth consecutive state tournament. She had 4.9 assists per game, shot 47.2 percent from the floor, 81.1 percent from the free-throw line and hit 37.9 percent on 3-pointers. She was the Roanoke Valley District co-player of the year. Stewart is being recruited by Appalachian State among others.

Frett, a 6-foot-3 center, averaged 35 points and 11 rebounds in leading defending state champion Phoebus through the state semifinals. Frett finished her high school career with 3,284 points, more than any other player - male or female - in Virginia's public school history. During her four years at Phoebus, the Phantoms were 110-8. She has signed with Georgia.
